North Carolina collects withholding for state income tax. Payroll tax amounts are calculated via a 'step' table that is similar to the federal withholding tax tables. State payroll withholding tax tables changed slightly in 2017, with a slightly higher tax rate (second tax increase in a row). The NC withholding formulas have changed 10 times in the past 27 years, including a major simplification in 2014.
