Changing Category Order in Breakdowns

Problem

User wants to change the order of categories in printed forms or popup menus, while using Goldenseal accounting software or construction estimating software.

Diagnosis

Goldenseal uses the Category System to determine the order in which Categories are displayed (and also, which subcategories are under each main category).

First, check to make sure the record uses the correct Category System. For example, in Estimates, click the More Info button and look at the Category System field.

Also, check to see if preferences are set to put categories into alphabetical order.

If it's the right system and you just want it to always be in a different order, follow the steps below.

Solution

To change the order of categories in a Category System, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Category Setup from the Costs menu, and choose Category Systems from the submenu.
  2. Click on the system to change, and click the Edit button.
  3. Click on a category row in the top table.
  4. Hold down the option key (Macintosh) or control key (Windows). The cursor will turn to a 'dragging hand'. Drag the row up or down to a different location.
  5. Click OK to save changes (or click Cancel to return to the original order).
