Adding New One-Time Estimate Items

NOTE-- We retired MacNail estimating in 2000, and replaced it with Goldenseal construction estimating software. There are still die-hard MacNail users, so we keep the manuals online for their use! Goldenseal is an integrated program that also includes accounting, scheduling and contract writing features. You can enter one-time items into Goldenseal Estimate records, by using one of the "unlisted" choices in the Cost Area column of the breakdown table.

One-Time Estimating Items

Each subdivision of the Specifications list has an 'other' row. This is a convenient place to type in one-of-a-kind items into a MacNail construction estimate.

To add a new item to an estimate created in MacNail construction estimating software:

1. Type a brief name for the item into column A (item), and as a reminder, the unit size in column B (unit size).
NOTE: Many one-of-a-kind items are not worth the bother of breaking down into a square foot price, so 'each' is often a reasonable unit size to use.
2. To cause the suggested units column to work the same as the adjacent items, copy the formula from one of the other cells in the section, and paste it into column C.
3. To use the suggested number of units, choose *Include in Bid from the EDIT menu. Otherwise, type the number of units to be used into column D (units used). Often, you will only use 1 unit.
4. If you have a firm dollar price for the item (including labor, materials and/or subcontractors), you can type it directly into column E, F or G. You can also enter a unit price formula into column E, F or G (see page 145).
WARNING: Typing into column E, F or G will wipe out the formula that assembles a price from the unit costs and the units used.
5. Otherwise, type person-hours per unit for skilled and unskilled workers into columns H and I, and a material dollar cost per unit into column J.
6. To use this item in other estimates, type a new, negative code number into column K. For best results, use a number that is close to one of the other items in the same subdivision. You can use decimals to fit 'in between' two numbers. For example, a new item that follows code number 1221 can be listed as -1221.1.

To add more than one item to a subdivision, you can often type over another item that is not being used.

1. Type new information over the top of the existing information for that item, following the same steps you would use in the 'other' row.
2. If you are warned that the cell is locked, choose Unprotect Document from the OPTIONS menu to remove the protection.
3. If you change an existing item, either remove the existing code number from column K, or type in a new number (preferably a negative number so it can be moved more easily to other estimates).
If you need more room in the subdivision, drag the mouse through the number of rows you need, then choose *Add Rows from the EDIT menu.

WARNING: Do not use Insert from the EDIT menu. You can seriously damage the structure of the worksheet if you don't add entire rows.
