Estimating Options

NOTE-- We retired MacNail estimating in 2000, and replaced it with Goldenseal construction estimating software. There are still die-hard MacNail users, so we keep the manuals online for their use! Goldenseal is an integrated program that also includes accounting, scheduling and contract writing features. The Estimates in Goldenseal offer many features not found in MacNail estimating.

OPTIONS menu

The OPTIONS menu lets you set some of the screen and report formats in the MacNail construction estimating software.

HINT: Two Excel commands on this menu are helpful in MacNail: Calculation... (see page 173) and Protect Document... (see page 60).

MacNail Options

Choose *Set MacNail Options to change a few details in MacNail's methods of operation.

Hide Screen changes--keep this item on to speed up menu operations. Turn it off to watch what MacNail is doing 'behind the scenes '. It can be entertaining.

Right margin--sets the size of the space on the right side of the screen. The number is measured in pixels--the small dots that make up your screen (you have to squint close to see them).
* Type in a number. We suggest 30 if you use MultiFinder. If you don 't use MultiFinder, set this number to zero.

Remove blank lines (Summation)--turn this item on to remove any blank Summation items from quick summaries and charts. Any categories equal to zero will not be listed in the report.

Display overhead/profit (Summation)--turn this item on to display 'soft' costs such as overhead and profit in quick summaries and charts. Turn it off to 'hide' them among the actual construction items.

Full category names (Charts)--turn this item on to show the full category names (e.g. Framing) in bar and pie charts. Turn it off to show the letter or number codes instead. For pie charts, things will usually get too crowded if you use full category names.

Open most recent estimate--Whichever estimate was worked on last will be considered to be the most recent.
* Turn this item on to have your most recent estimate opened automatically, whenever you open the Estimating Manager.
* If you work on several estimates at a time it is more convenient to turn this option off.
