Custom Estimating Templates

NOTE-- MacNail estimating was retired in 2000, and replaced with Goldenseal construction estimating software. There are still die-hard MacNail users, so we keep the manuals online for their use! Goldenseal is an integrated program that also includes accounting, scheduling and contract writing features. It also includes templates, to make estimating easier.

Custom Templates

Custom templates can save you a great deal of time, since you won't have to change as many things in each estimate while creating a bid. There are four basic ways to customize in MacNail worksheets.

NOTE: If you usually use the Hyper*Estimators to set up your MacNail estimates, then you will only need to customize those items that are not included in the Hyper *Estimators.

* Adjust Prices: You can adjust prices quickly in the MacNail construction estimating software by using the built in fudge factors. Or you can go through the unit prices line by line and match them to the prices your suppliers quote to you. Using fudge factors is quicker and easier, but adjusting the unit prices is more accurate and frees up the fudge factors for other uses (see page 64).
* Set-Up Units Used: You can set up a 'stock project' by pre-selecting specifications items. Then, for each bid, you will need to change only those items that are different from your stock project. You can concentrate on unusual details, rather than worrying about whether you remembered to include wallboard taping. Many of the changes you will make when customizing are similar to the ones you might make while creating a bid. The difference is that you will work on an estimator rather than on an estimate.
* Set-Up Specifications Formulas: While setting up your stock project you can set whether each item is subcontracted or done by your own crew. You may also wish to change which wage rate is charged for a particular item. You do this in the formulas in Specifications.
* Add and Delete Specifications Items: We have tried to include a good general selection of construction items in MacNail's estimators, but we have yet to find a builder who doesn't want to add a few items to the list. Also, due to regional differences, there may be some items in the specifications list that you will never need.
You can also use an Estimate to create an Estimator if you find you have set up a reasonable stock project while creating an estimate and have not erased any formulas.
