Estimating Specifications

NOTE-- In 2000 we introduced Goldenseal construction estimating software, and retired MacNail and BidMagic (our previous estimating programs). There are still die-hard users out there, so we keep the manuals online for them! Goldenseal is an integrated program that also includes accounting, job costing and project management features. It uses an item breakdown in Estimate records, to list the specific items included in the project. Goldenseal shows only some items in the list, and makes the rest available from a popup list.

Step 3--Set Specifications

The Specifications list is a 'checklist' of about 1000 construction items, arranged by categories. It controls exactly which items will be used in the project.

To use the Specifications list:

Enter specs directly into the MacNail construction estimating software
OR
Import them from one of the Hyper*Estimators. If you do use one of the Hyper*Estimators, check through the project specifications list. Most projects include at least some unusual details that should be entered as new line items, directly into the MacNail construction estimator software.

To go to the Specifications list:

1. Choose *Specifications from the MacNail menu.
2. The worksheet will recalculate all formulas as soon as Specifications appears (unless you haven't made major changes in the Dimensions since the last 'Calculate Now'). Recalculating all formulas will take between ten seconds and one minute, depending on the speed of your computer.
You can scroll down through the specifications list and enter those items that will actually be used on this job.

HINT: You can create your own custom estimators that will automatically include the construction items you normally use (see page 144). Use them as a 'blank form' so you won't have to do as much setup work on each job.
