Plywood structure covering a sidewalk to prevent injuries from falling items. The unit size is one lineal foot of cover.

Construction details

One pair of 4x4 posts every eight feet, with 2x6 framing supporting half-inch exterior plywood over the sidewalk.

Labor Costs

We figure that a crew consisting of one skilled worker (carpenter) and one unskilled worker will install 2 feet of sidewalk cover per hour.

Material Costs

The cost includes lumber, plywood and nails. It does not include painting or any other finish work.

Experienced crews that install large quantities of sidwalk covering can probably do it much quicker than our costing data.

Comments

This unit cost does not include any salvage value for the plywood, lumber or posts. If you are able to re-use the components, figure a negative waste factor of maybe -25% to -33% to account for reuse.
