Opening Excel 1.5 Files

Problem

XL5 can't open XL1.5 documents (Macintosh version only)
sorry, not enough memory to open xxxx file message when using Excel 5.0 with MacNail construction software for Macintosh computers.

NOTE-- Windows version does not have this problem since they started with version 2.1 (which XL5 opens OK).

Diagnosis

If they use XL5 and it says it can't find or open a file, it's probably an XL 1.5 blank.
To confirm the problem, use the regular File Open command to try to open the blank or whatever file it says it couldn't find. You'll get a more explanatory error message.

Solution

Do they have XL2.2, 3.0 or 4.0 available? If so, they can run it (re-install if necessary), open the MacNail Manager, hit the Utilities button, and choose 'convert to Excel xxx' from the Special menu. That will convert all MacNail files to the newer format so XL5 can read them.
We can also send shipping disks ($5 each) in XL4 format. They'd then re-install MacNail, and move their data files from the old folders to the new folders.

Comments

A few payroll disks went out in XL1.5 format, early in '95-- if the problem occurs when making payroll report, they may just need a new payroll disk (in XL2.2 format as of 1/15/95 or so).
