Damaged File

Problem

damaged MacNail construction software worksheet that Excel can't open.
lost worksheet missing from hard drive
can't open a file (says 'not enough memory') while using MacNail construction management software, with or without backup copy of file .

NOTE-- Try this link if the file opens ok, but data is wrong.

Diagnosis

If it says 'out of memory' when opening file with MacNail commands, try the regular File--Open command. It'll usually give a more descriptive message about what the problem is.
• Excel 5 can't open XL 1.5 documents (see #410)
• Not enough memory-- close some documents, maybe quit/restart
• File damaged or can't be opened-- see below

Solution

Do they have a recent backup of their MacNail construction software files?
YES-- life is easy, just replace with the backup.
NO-- life is tough. Will need to reconstitute the information that was in the file.
• Have they made reports or extracts from the file? If so, they can copy/paste that information into the reconstituted file
• Have they made any printouts? At least they only need to re-type for those items. See also item #227

Comments

If no backup, give them the 'you oughta backup' lecture.
• Apologize for bringing it up as such a bad time, but explain that a good backup system doesn't cost much or take long, and it saves so much aggravation it's definitely worth it for the future.
• Also explain that most people seem to have to lose something important before they'll get paranoid enough to have a good backup system! In fact that's how we got careful about it ourselves...

Long-shot Hints: sometimes you can open the file with a Word Processor using 'open all' option, and salvage some information. If they have Norton Utilities, or a similar file-recovery program, that might also be worth a try.
