Estimating Basic Project Dimensions

NOTE-- In 2000 we introduced Goldenseal construction estimating software, and retired both our older computer software programs (MacNail and BidMagic). There are still die-hard users of both programs, so we keep the manuals online for their use! Goldenseal is an integrated program that also includes accounting, job costing and contract writing features. It starts with some basic project dimensions that are similar to the ones used in the MacNail estimating program.

Basic Dimensions

This section allows you to fill in the floor area, perimeter, partition length and ceiling height for each floor. The totals for the project are automatically calculated for you in the italic cells at the top of the diagram.

Type the following measurements into the MacNail construction estimating software:

1. Choose Calculate Now from the OPTIONS menu to see a 'suggested' number for each dimension.
2. You will leave zeros or blanks for the basement, second and third floors, since our project is only one story high.
3. Type in 260 for the floor area--the 'suggested' value is not correct.
4. Type in 52 for the perimeter, (the length of the outside walls in lineal feet)--the 'suggested' value is not correct.
5. Measure all the partitions (inside walls) on the floor plan, in inches--there should be approximately 5 1/2 inches of walls. The scale is 1/4' per ft., which converts to 22 feet of interior walls.

6. Type in 8 for the ceiling height, in feet.

Next you will move down from cell to cell, entering additional dimensions for your project. Use the scrolling controls at the right side of the window to bring new cells into view.
