Running Multiple Businesses

Problem

How to run two businesses with MacNail construction management software. Handling a second multiple sideline business or company, both general contractor and subcontractor

Diagnosis

The key question is, how separate are the two businesses?

1. If the businesses share many vendors and employees (e.g. a remodeling biz and a roofing biz), they can probably share one MacNail folder.
2. If the businesses are VERY distinct, use two separate MacNail folders.

Solution

CASE 1--SHARING ONE FOLDER.
Each biz will have separate Ledger (or possibly more than one apiece). Will probably also have separate estimators, Labor Log, Material Log, etc. But they will all be in the same Accounts/Estimates/Schedules folders.
Payroll reports will be based on employees from BOTH businesses together--to pay some employees from one account and some from another, they'll have to do it by hand rather than use the 'post to ledger' command.

Comments

CASE 2--USING SEPARATE FOLDERS
Make a second MacNail folder for the 2nd business, and set up a completely different Master Index, ledgers, logs, cc sheets, estimators, estimates, etcetera in each folder.
They can only work on one business at a time unless they have enough RAM to create and open two separate copies of Excel (they'll have to duplicate the Excel application and have two copies of it under 2 different names on the hard disk), which can then run two different Managers.
