Estimator Worksheet Sections

NOTE-- We retired the MacNail estimating program in 2000, and replaced it with Goldenseal construction estimating software. There are still a significant number of die-hard MacNail users, so we keep the manuals online for them! Goldenseal is an integrated program that also includes accounting, scheduling and contract writing.

Each MacNail estimate contains four basic sections:

Summation

Each MacNail estimating file includes a Summation section, which shows a compact breakdown of project costs, using just the main cost categories.

When you create a new estimator in the MacNail construction estimating software, the main cost categories are shown in the Summation, whether or not you also use cost subcategories.

When you add, delete or rename main categories in an existing estimator, those changes also show up in the Summation.

NOTE-- In Goldenseal, you'll use a printed form and/or an Estimate report, to see the summation breakdown. Use a breakdown by category.

Clearinghouse

If an estimating file uses subcategories as well as categories, it will have a Clearinghouse section where you can see the cost of main categories, and subcategories. The Clearinghouse gives you a detailed look at your 'hard' construction costs for the project. It is a very good place to type in firm price quotes from your subcontractors or material suppliers.

NOTE: If the estimating file uses only main categories, it will not have a Clearinghouse.

When you create a new estimator, the main cost categories and subcategories are all listed in the Clearinghouse portion of the estimator.

When you add, delete or rename main categories or subcategories in an existing estimator, those changes also show up in the Clearinghouse.

NOTE-- In Goldenseal, you'll use a printed form and/or an Estimate report, to see the clearinghouse breakdown. Use a breakdown by subcategory.

Fixed Costs and Dimensions

Estimating worksheets always include a Fixed Cost area, where wage rates and other basic operating costs are entered. These costs will be used in the computation of actual construction costs.

Estimating worksheets also include a Dimensions section, where basic construction dimensions are entered. These quantities will be used as 'suggested' amounts in Specifications.

The MacNail construction management software does not provide specific tools for changing Fixed Costs and Dimensions. However, there are many changes you can make using standard Excel spreadsheet tools (see pages 61-65).

NOTE-- In Goldenseal, click the Dimensions button to enter project dimensions.
