NOTE-- These manual pages cover our older MacNail construction accounting software, which we retired in 2000. It has been replaced by Goldenseal, which is an integrated business management program that includes general accounting, job costing, payroll and project billing, plus construction cost estimating, contract writing and simple scheduling. Goldenseal does not require Excel, but it is otherwise very similar to MacNail.

The computer can be an amazing organizational tool. This section will tell you how the MacNail construction accounting software can make your financial and business management much easier.

MacNail Accounting, like any accounting system, will require a certain amount of record keeping and data entry. It will not organize your business for you without your help!

Fortunately, there are so many gains to be had from computerized records that it is worth the effort to get started

MacNail Accounting Worksheet Basics

The MacNail construction accounting software uses separate worksheets, or files, to store different chunks of information.

Worksheet Types

The primary MacNail accounting worksheets are of the following types--

* Checkbook Ledgers (or just plain Ledgers) handle your money transactions. Each of them will have the word Ledger as a part of its file name. Ledgers store basic financial information that you will want to keep around for a very long time.
* Logbooks (or just plain Logs) store information about specific expenditures. Each of them will have the word Log as a part of its file name. Logbooks contain fairly valuable information, but you probably won't have much use for them after a few years.
* Reports provide specific information of some kind. Each of them will have the word Report as a part of its file name. Reports are expendable--you will make them, use them once or twice, and then toss them in the trash when you are done with them.
