Type-In Payroll Deductions

How do I type in a deduction that I calculated by some other method?

For almost all payroll deductions, you can set up a Tax Item in Goldenseal payroll software that will automatically calculate the amount to deduct. If it has a complex calculation, you may also need to use a Tax Table to handle progressive rates or other details.

However, if the deduction amount is irregular or if you want to use some other method to calculate a payroll deduction, here's how you can do it.

Deduction Setup

To create a Tax Item that allows you to type in an amount each pay period, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Payroll Setup from the Costs menu, and choose Tax Items from the submenu.
  2. Click the New button.
  3. Enter a name for the deduction.
  4. Enter Typed-In Amount into the Calculation Method popup field.
  5. Enter the tax type, and the account (if any) to which the deductions are paid.
  6. Click OK.

To use the Tax Item, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Payroll Setup from the Costs menu, and choose Tax Packages from the submenu.
  2. Open any packages that include this deduction, and put a checkmark next to the tax item.
  3. Click OK.

NOTE-- In Goldenseal payroll software versions 4.45 and earlier, the Typed-In Amount option is not available. In those versions, you can turn on the Allow Payroll Deduction Changes checkbox in Options--Preferences--Expenses. That will allow you to type in values for any deductions.

Entering Deductions

When you are ready to write payroll, follow these steps to enter any typed-in values:

  1. Choose Write Payroll from the Bank menu.
  2. Double-click on the Deductions column, for an employee who gets a typed-in deduction amount.
  3. Click in the Amount column for any tax items that needs to be changed, and type in the amount.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Repeat steps 2 to 4 for any employees that need typed-in deductions.
