Record Numbers

The record number at upper right doesn't match the record number at upper left!

Goldenseal accounting software uses two different types of record numbers, and they won't necessarily match with each other.

Found Index Number

The number in the "book" at upper left tells you which record you are looking at, within the current set of found records. It's sort of like the page number, in a "book" that consists of all the records you have currently found.

For example, in the illustration at right, there are 881 total Cost Item records, and you currently have "found" 819 of them (the other records are still within Goldenseal, but they aren't currently visible). You are currently viewing the 794th of those found records.

If you slide the triangle to the left or right, you will move to a different record, and the index number will change.

Record ID number

All Goldenseal accounts and transactions have a record ID number, which is located at the upper right corner of each record window. Goldenseal assigns this number to each record when you first create it with the New button or the New Record command.

For example, in the illustration at right, this is Cost Item #795. It was the 795th record that we created, when we built this Starter File.

HINT-- For most types of records, Goldenseal just starts with record #1 and then keeps going. However for some common transactions, you can use a fancier numbering format. Use the Record Numbers command to set the next record number, and the way it is displayed.

Numbers Matching

If you create a bunch of new records, and use Find All to find all records, then the two record numbers will be exactly the same. However, if you ever delete any records, then the found index number will not match the record ID number, since there are some missing records that throw off the sequence.

Likewise, if you use the Find command to locate just some records, then the two numbers will not match, since some records are "hidden" temporarily.
