Moving Files from CD or CD-RW |
Problem WINDOWS ONLY User is having problems getting a backup copy of Goldenseal company file onto their hard drive from a CD or CD-RW. Diagnosis User is trying to move file from CD to hard drive. They use Move To Folder and it tells them "Acess is denied. The source file may be in use". Confusing and misleading. Or they manage to move the file, and when they try to open it, Goldenseal business management software tells them the file is locked or on a CD. A related problem-- they may get a locked message if they try to open the file while on the CD or CD-RW. MOVING FILES SOLUTION To move a file from CD to hard drive, follow these steps:
HINT-- If they use Move To Folder, they'll get the "Access denied" message since that erases it from the source, which is not possible from a CD or CD-RW. Ugly interface, the command should be disabled so users won't try it and get confused. LOCKED FILE SOLUTION After they move the file, Windows will still think it is locked and on a CD, since it is not smart enough to know it's now on a hard drive. To fix it, follow these steps:
Note that this is all incredibly stupid interface programming so users will be frustrated and easily confused. Windows lets them open and edit the properties on the CD, so if they get a "An error has occurred..access is denied" message, they probably are working on the CD copy by mistake. In that case, the base thing is to have them close all windows and then double-click on My Computer, so you know exactly where they are. Comments Entered 1/18/05 by Dennis. Updated 11/3/2010. |
