How BidMagic Calculates Takeoffs

NOTE-- We retired the BidMagic Material Takeoff Software in 2001. It has been replaced by Goldenseal Material Takeoff Software.

We still include this BidMagic estimating software manual as a convenience for users of our older program. Many features are similar, in Goldenseal estimating.

How BidMagic Calculates Material Takeoffs

BidMagic Material Takeoff Software calculates takeoff lists based on the assemblies for each line item you entered into Specifications (for more about assemblies, see page 38).

For example, if you entered 2500 square feet of cedar siding into Specifications, we can follow these steps to see how the takeoff is calculated:

1. Click on any pop-up button under Siding Materials on the Siding card, and choose Edit Unit Prices. This will take you to the Unit Price card.
2. Select cedar siding from the list of prices, then click the Assembly button next to the material unit price. You will see the material assembly that is used for cedar siding.
3. According to the assembly, each square foot of siding requires 2 lineal feet of 8" cedar siding (with a waste of 8%), plus 0.035 lb of stainless nails (with a waste of 6%).
4. BidMagic multiplies these quantities by the 2500 square feet actually covered by siding, to arrive at the materials included in the takeoff list. The formula is amount * (1 + waste %) * number of units.
5. Using the formula, there will be 2 * 1.08 * 2500 lineal feet of 8" cedar siding, or 5400 lineal feet.
6. There will also be .035 * 1.06 * 2500 pounds of stainless nails, or a total of 92.75 pounds.
When BidMagic prepares a material takeoff for the entire bid, it uses the same process for each specifications item.
