Types of Sorts

The MacNail construction accounting software offsers a variety of sorting orders.

NOTE-- Our newer Goldenseal construction accounting software also lets you sort your accounting records into whatever order you'd like.

Sort By Job Number if you want to group the items in the file by job, in ascending order. This is useful if you want to use Excel's =sum() formula to get the total amount for a particular project, very quickly.

Sort By Payee Number to group all items in the file by employee, material supplier or subcontractor. In a Ledger, items will be sorted with each type of payment (Labor, Material, Subcontractor, or Other) grouped together, with the payees of each type in ascending order.

Sort By Date to restore a file to its original chronological order.

Sort By Category to group all items in the file by construction category.

Sort By Amount to group all items in the file by size of payout, with the largest ones first. In a Ledger, all payouts will be listed first, in descending order, followed by all deposits (also in descending order).

Sort By Job Name or By Payee Name to group all items in the file by the desired names. The listing will be made in descending order (z to a) in order to keep blank items at the bottom of the list.

Make a Tax Sort to group by job number first, then by category. This makes it easy to get itemized expenses, when figuring your income tax liability.

Sorting can damage the check number sequence of a Ledger, if you have entered some checks out of chronological sequence. If you want to work on a ledger without damage, use Save As from the FILE menu to give it a different name, then sort. You can do your work with this temporary new file, then use Delete from the FILE menu to throw it out, when you are done with it.

Other types of files can be returned to their approximate original order by sorting By Date.
