Project Setup

Project Numbers and Names

Type in a code number and name for each active project. The code numbers must be in ascending order with no blank spaces. They do NOT need to be in a continuous sequence. 1-2-4-6-7 is fine, but 2-6-5 or 1---4-5 are not.
HINT: To make sure your project codes are in proper order, transfer to MacNail Cost Control, and choose *Put Projects in order from the FORMAT menu.

NOTE-- Goldenseal construction accounting software is the successor to MacNail, which we retired in 2000. Goldenseal is an integrated business management program that includes general accounting, job costing, payroll and project billing, plus construction cost estimating, contract writing and simple scheduling. It is also very good at managing projects!

Although numerical project code numbers are usually the easiest to handle, you can use any combination of numbers and/or letters. For example, you can use a number code for the year, followed by a letter for each job (e.g. 90A, 90B). You can also use decimals (90.001, 90.002) or straight text (SM for Smith, JO for Jones).
You can remove job names when they are no longer needed. However, make sure that the jobs are completely inactive, with no active 'lookup formulas' referring to the project name.

To remove a project name:
1. Click on the inactive project number.
2. Use the Delete or Backspace key, or choose Clear from the EDIT menu.
3. Click in the inactive project name.
4. Use the Delete or Backspace key, or choose Clear from the EDIT menu.
5. Transfer to MacNail Cost Control, and choose *Put Project in order from the FORMAT menu to get the list back in the proper order.

Workman's Comp--by category

The two columns at far right are used to calculate workman's compensation rates by category. Use them only if you are calculating your workman's compensation percentages based on the actual work performed.

Make sure that each construction cost code (letter or number) is listed in the Work comp category column, and give each code its percentage rate in the Work comp rate column.

Each comp rate should be entered as a percentage--If you are paying at the rate of $.85 per $100 of payroll for supervision, type .085 into the Work comp rate column next to the SUP cost code.
