Speed Hints

A few hints for fastest operation:
1. Don't let files grow too large. Start a new Ledger or Logbook when you reach 300 to 1500 items (depending on the speed of your computer).speed, hints
2. Close unnecessary files when you no longer need them.
3. Switch between manual and automatic calculation, depending on the type of work you are doing (see page 221).
4. Always run from your hard disk. Never run from a floppy disk. A hard disk is faster and has greater storage capacity.
5. Run lengthy operations when you don't need to be at the computer.
6. Keep a 'clean' hard disk. Avoid excess INITS, sound files, and other toys (see page 214). Avoid public domain programs--some can cause major hard disk damage.

NOTE-- In 2000, MacNail was replaced by Goldenseal construction accounting software. Goldenseal is an integrated program that includes general accounting, job costing, payroll and project billing, plus estimating and other features. Goldenseal runs very quickly, mainly because computers are much faster than the time this manual was written.

Expect calculation to go slower:
1. When you have many Lookup formulas in your the MacNail construction accounting software worksheets (see pages 57 and 165).
2. When you are using Query formulas (see page 166).
3. When you have a Report open. Reports use a Table formula, which recalculates slowly.Tables
4. When you have many worksheets open at one time.
5. When you have a very large worksheet.
