We have 'linked' the Ledgers and Labor, Material
and Subcontractor Logs to the Master Index in the MacNail construction accounting software.
NOTE-- In 2000, MacNail was replaced by
Goldenseal construction
accounting software. Goldenseal is an integrated program that
includes general accounting, job costing, payroll and
project billing, plus estimating and other features.
MacNail always had problems with file linking, and we
solved that by putting all company info into a single
Goldenseal file.
When using
linked worksheets, keep the following pointers in mind:

Open the Master Index before opening Ledgers or Records. The MacNail menu commands will always open the
files in the correct order. If you want to open one of the accounting worksheets using Open from the file menu,
or by double-clicking, then make sure you first open the Master Index.

If you do accidentally open a Ledger or Record when the Master Index is not already open, you will be asked
whether to 'update links to non-resident worksheets'. For best results, click Cancel, then open the Master
Index.

Never change the name of the Master Index.

Never move Ledgers, Records, or the Master Index without moving all other linked files. If you want to store
an old copy of a Ledger or Record, then use *Lookups to remove all lookup formulas before you move it.
