VPN Setup-- Windows Client

Here's how to set up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) using Windows XP:

Server Setup

Your server machine needs to have an Internet connection-- usually via a Cable Modem, DSL Modem or Wireless. network connector.

NOTE-- A dial-up Internet connection will not be sufficient.

Your Local Area Network also needs to have a static IP address, so other computers can locate your server. You'll need to contact your Internet Service Provider to arrange that. Usually there is a monthly or annual fee for a static address.

Set up your Internet firewall so it does not block the port you use for Goldenseal. Usually that is port #18259, but you can change it to a different port number to increase security.

Client Setup

To set up the client machine so it can sign on over the Internet, follow these steps:

1. Click on the Start button, and choose Control Panel.

2. Double-click on the Network Connections icon.

3. Double-click on New Connection Wizard. When you see the welcome dialog, click Next.

4. Choose Connect to the network at my workplace, then click Next.

5. Choose Virtual Private Network, then click Next.

6. Enter a name for the connection, then click Next.

7. Enter the static IP address for your server, then click Next.

8. At the final confirmation dialog, click Finish. Windows will complete the VPN sign-on setup.
