W-2 Year End Periods

Problem

when doing w-2 forms, how do you handle the first and last pay period (which may be split between the two years)?
YEAR-END QUESTIONS

Diagnosis

User not sure how to use MacNail construction payroll software to handle pay periods that are close to Dec 31.

Solution

W-2 and all other payroll reporting is based on the PAYDAY (the day the checks are passed out to employees).

If a payday is in this year, it's included in this year's W-2 reports.
If payday is next year, it's not included in this year's W-2, even if it's for work that was done this year.

NOTE-- it's not legal to shift the pay day so it's moved to another year. You're supposed to do it on a regular basis, period.
