Main has state income tax withholding, using a 'step' table that is similar to the federal withholding tax tables. Payroll withholding rates changed in 2005, and in 13 of the past 15 years.

Maine Withholding Instructions

To enter withholding information for an employee, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Employees from the Accounts menu.
  2. Locate the employee record.
  3. Enter the employee's marital status into the Marital Status field (see note below).
  4. Enter the number of federal dependents into the Federal Exemptions field.
  5. Enter the number of Maine dependents into the State Exemptions field.

Maine Unemployment Tax Instructions

In 2005, Maine SUTA (state unemployment insurance tax) is based on the first $12,000 of wages for each employee. The tax rate depends on your company's past employment history.

To enter your state SUTA tax rate into the Goldenseal payroll software, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Payroll Setup from the Costs menu, and choose Tax Items from the submenu.
  2. You'll see a list of Tax Items. Locate the Maine SUTA tax in the list, and double-click on it. HINT: If you don't see Maine SUTA in the list, you'll need to import your state's payroll info first.
  3. Enter your percentage rate into the field to the right of Calculation method.
  4. If the cutoff amount has changed, enter it into the dollar field to the right of First Adjustment.

Marital Status

Enter one of the following values for each employee, based on their marital and filing status:

  • Single- single employee
  • Married- married, single income
  • Dual Income- married, two incomes
  • Head of House- not used
  • Other- not used

NOTE: Married employees with two incomes may still elect to withhold according to the Married one income schedule, but they may owe money at the end of the year due to underwithholding.
