Construction estimating cost for a trench dug by hand to a depth of 3 feet, with a width of 12" to 18".

Lineal foot.

Labor and Equipment Costs

We figure about 1 unskilled hour per foot of trench. This price includes backfilling and tamping after utility work is completed.

The pricing is based on city conditions, including occasional problems with underground utilities, tree roots, large rocks and other surprises. Under easier digging conditions you might manage 2 feet per hour.
