PRoblem

numeric part of keyboard not working while using MacNail construction software
calculator keypad not working-- jumps around instead of entering numbers

Diagnosis

num-lock key probably was reset. XL's status bar will display "NUM" in lower right if the keypad is set to num-lock (instead of regular data entry).

Solution

Type shift-clear to toggle num-lock status.
