Showing File Extensions

PRoblem

here's how to force Windows to show file name extensions, so you can rename files where XL7 has gratuitously added an .XLS to the file name for MacNail construction estimating & accounting software, and won't show you suffix for file name

Diagnosis

WINDOWS 95:
From Start button, choose Programs
choose Windows Explorer submenu
from View Menu, choose Options
Click the View tab
Turn off the option labeled "Hide MS DOS File extensions for file types that are registered"

alternate route:
- Open 'My Computer'
- Open C Drive, then MacNail, then desired folder
- Go to View menu, choose Options
- Click the middle tab (View)
- There is a checkbox named 'Hide MS extensions for registered files'. Turn it off, hit OK.
- Select the file, then choose Rename from the File menu
- Fix the name

Solution

FOR WIN98- in MS Explorer click Tools, Folder Options, View. Turn off "Hide file extensions "

FOR WIN 2000 and WIN XP-- Click Start button, choose Settings, choose Control Panels. Double-click on Folder Options. Click the View tab. Turn OFF the checkbox for "Hide File Extensions for known file types" (it may be a little different in XP).
