software who get a new computer and then have excel compatibility
questions with new
Macintosh G3 or G4 system
Mac System 9
Diagnosis
Here's the best I can tell right now for compatibility:
System 8.6 and G4
Excel 3.0- not compatible
Excel 3.0a- runs fine, no problems experienced
Excel 4 and up- OK
System 9 and G4
Excel 3- not compatible
Excel 3.0a- runs fine
Excel 4- seems to run OK (limited testing)
Excel 5 and up- seems to be OK, though XL5 quits more often than usual
System 9.2 and G4
Excel 3- not compatible
Excel 3.0a- runs, but zaps hierarchical menus in Finder. Under 9.2.2 it runs
but crashes if you click on menus, so you can only use keyboard shortcuts
Excel 4 and 5- not compatible
System X Classic
Excel 3, 4 and 5- not compatible
Solution
Our general reliablity experience with different Excel versions:
Excel 3.0a- very reliable before System 9.2
Excel 4- occasional problems (first reports of 'code change' problems)
Excel 5- maximum problems (code change, crash during file open or during some commands)
Excel 8- much more reliable than 5, however code change problem still exists
