Excel 5 Won't Open Files

PROBLEM

Macintosh: Excel 5 refuses to convert a mgr from earlier format to xl5 format, says "sorry, cannot access read-only xxxx".

DIAGNOSIS

XL 5 can't open Excel 1.5 files. Need to open them first with XL 2.2, 3 or 4, save them in that format. Or use new blanks that are already in newer format.

Some extensions conflict with XL5:
EasyOpen
MacLink Plus
NOW Utilities

SOLUTION

restart with extensions off (hold down Shift key while restarting), see if that fixes it. Then you have to identify the extension(s) which is causing the conflict with the MacNail Construction Accounting Software
