Opening Goldenseal Files

Problem

double-click on company file opens older version of Goldenseal business management software. Primarily a Macintosh problem, but it may also happen on Windows if they installed an earlier versions.

Diagnosis

They double-click on their company file, and it opens an older version of Goldenseal, possibly on another computer via a network. It will give an error message, if the company file has a newer version.

Once you open a company file with a newer version of Goldenseal, the file is updated to that version. After that, an older version of Goldenseal will not be able to open the file. It will just give an error message and stop.

NOTE-- When we release new versions, we frequently make changes to the data stored in records (for example, adding new fields). The old program won't know they are there, so it will get very confused and possibly cause serious problems. So we just prevent it.

Solution

Remove the older copy of Goldenseal application. It's wise to do that always, to avoid confusion.

Background- In version 1.03 we had to change the Mac creator code for Goldenseal because of a conflict with another program that also had TURT as a creator. So files created with Goldenseal 1.02 or earlier will search for the earlier application and use it instead of the latest.

Even with later versions, when you double-click on a company file, the Mac OS will just grab the nearest copy of the Goldenseal business management software application.

Note that Windows 'registers' the .glds extension to a specific application when the user runs the installer program.
