Calibrating BidMagic Estimating

Step Two--Make a Comparison Estimate

Once you've collected actual job cost information for one or more projects, use BidMagic to create a detailed construction estimate for each of them.

To make a comparison estimate for calibrating purposes, follow these steps:

1. Plan to go through the project very carefully, step by step, just as if you were bidding it as an actual construction project. If you are just starting with the BidMagic construction estimating program, use the BidMagic at a Glance section as a guide for the first estimate you do. Refer to the remainder of the manual if you have specific questions. HINT: It's a lot less stressful to learn our programs on a job you've already done, rather than on a bid you have to get out by tomorrow!
2. Start the BidMagic estimating software by double-clicking on a template. When you are asked for a new file name for the bidding template, click Cancel so you can work on the template itself. NOTE: If you aren't asked for a new file name, go to the Preferences card and turn on 'Keep this File as a Template.' Close BidMagic, then repeat step 2.
3. If you want to modify your main copy of the BidMagic construction estimating software, you can skip to the next step. To work on a copy so you still have the original version intact, choose Save As from the File menu, and save BidMagic under a new name.
4. Go to the Basic Costs card. If you only plan to use BidMagic for rough estimates, click Rough Estimate. Otherwise click Finished Bid.
5. If you only plan to use the BidMagic construction estimating program for rough estimates, set the Locality Factor and the Quality factor to zero.
6. Set all Fudge factors to zero. Also enter current wage rates for your 'average' skilled and unskilled workers.
7. Enter overhead, profit and contingency percentages on the Overhead & Profit card.
8. Enter all appropriate soft costs on the Soft Costs card.
9. Go through every Dimensions card and enter everything that applies to the project.
10. Go through every Specifications card, and enter each piece of construction work that is included in the project. NOTE: Keep an eye out for 'extras' such as unusual framing details, custom trim, or bay windows. Be sure to add them to the bid along with the more usual components such as foundations, framing and basic trim.
11. Click the Calculator button to calculate the bid price.
12. Choose Bottom Line from the Navigate menu so you can see a detailed breakdown of project costs. To get a printed copy of the comparison bid, choose Print Bottom Line from the File menu.
